collaboration: coaching
In skiing you can't always have a video camera on to see what you’re doing wrong and it is hard to know what to change and when to do certain things. A coach is a great person to collaborate with, for example I might be hitting the deck of the pipe and falling every-time I try a certain trick but not know why, that's when my coach would step in and say " you need to wait a little longer before you throw the trick, you’re doing it to early so there isn't as much time in the air". Next time I try the trick I would take his advice even though it might feel different and see if it helped, I might still fall a couple times but you can feel it making a difference. He might tell me to “pop” more or maybe even work on a different trick.
You don't always have to listen to your coach either it’s a communication game if you feel hurt and don’t tell your coach then they might not realize they’re pushing you too hard. It's extremely important to inform your coach/ photographer of whoever you may be working with if you’re tired, hurt, hungry, discouraged, or any feeling you might have because it’s a group effort to decide if continuing is a good idea. Encouragement is a huge part of success and you can’t always encourage yourself so having someone there to help motivate you is a huge key to success! Sometimes it’s just not my day and I can get pretty discouraged, those are the times when it’s good to have someone there.
Competing in halfpipe skiing is touchy when it comes to the weather, it can be prime conditions or a nightmare. When there are bad conditions the risk of injury sky rockets. It is hard to perform your best and you probably don’t even want to try your best tricks. For example you might see everyone taking it easy with tricks they know they can always do and land instead of throwing down a challenging high risk run. This is the time when a coach or another person can help you decide what run to do.
